The Democracy Lab: Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia

Get ready for an unforgettable week exploring Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia! From famous monuments and museums to Capitol Hill, historic neighborhoods, and an exciting day in Philadelphia, this trip brings American history to life in the places where it actually happened. We’ll explore some of the most iconic sights in Washington, D.C., including the National Mall and Smithsonian museums. One evening, we’ll head out after dark for a special tour of the Lincoln, World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam Veterans Memorials. Seeing these powerful places lit up at night is an unforgettable experience. We’ll also get a behind-the-scenes look at how our government works with a day on Capitol Hill, where students can see the places where important decisions are made. At the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, we’ll explore the history of the Holocaust and think about the choices people make when faced with injustice and difficult times. By train, we travel to the birthplace of our nation! In Philadelphia, we will visit Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were debated and adopted. At the National Constitution Center, we’ll explore what “We the People” means and consider what it means to be part of a democracy today. And this trip isn’t all museums and monuments! We’ll enjoy an evening theater performance, dinner in Georgetown, and downtime by the waterfront. You'll have plenty of time to explore, laugh, learn, and make memories together.

Come ready to walk, explore, ask questions, solve challenges, experience two incredible cities, and see American history up close. By the end of the week, you’ll have a better understanding of where our country came from—and a chance to think about how you can help shape where it goes next.
