Remote Control Airplanes and Aeronautics

Come build and fly airplanes!  In this course, we'll explore the science of flight by designing, building, and flying several types of model airplanes. We'll start with paper airplanes, experimenting with wing design, control surfaces, flight patterns, and stability. Next, we'll move on to foam-board airplanes, designing and testing our own models to explore the principles of aerodynamics and aircraft control. Finally, we'll build and fly fully functional RC airplanes from kits.  Along the way, we'll investigate the science of aeronautics and see how the principles of flight apply to the airplanes we're building.  We will welcome guest speakers to the classroom to share their experience with airplanes and aeronautics. We'll also visit a local airport to learn about general aviation and get an up-close look at real airplanes.  If you enjoy designing, building, experimenting, flying, crashing, and trying again, this course is for you!

Educational Goals:

  1. Learn the basics of RC airplane design and construction.

  2. Explore ideas in the science of aeronautics.

  3. Visit a local airport to learn about general aviation.

  4. Become more confident in designing and building.
