Chicago Area Colleges & Culture (Grades 10-11)

Chicago—an energetic city with a rich history of art and music—is also home to some of the nation’s top universities. This Winterim is open to sophomores and juniors who are interested in getting a head start on the admissions process.

We will begin with a short road trip outside of Chicago for the first two days, visiting schools such as Marquette University in Milwaukee, the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and Beloit College in Wisconsin. Once in Chicago, we will explore a variety of schools that may include the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Lake Forest College. Please note that the itinerary is subject to change, as schools generally do not confirm tours more than a few months in advance.

Between college visits, we’ll take advantage of the cultural and entertainment opportunities that Chicagoland offers, including possible visits to Millennium Park and the Art Institute of Chicago, as well as at least one chance to enjoy its famous deep-dish pizza.

Students should be prepared for a significant amount of walking as we navigate metropolitan areas and tour campuses throughout the week. Before departing for Chicago, we will begin with a local day visiting CU Boulder to learn how to make the most of each campus visit and start discerning which factors will help each individual student build their college list.

By the end of this Winterim, students will have gained a clearer understanding of the college admissions process. They will meet with admissions officers, speak with current students (including Dawson graduates), and research specific majors, programs, and offerings at each school. Students will also record their impressions of each campus as a way to clarify their own priorities for their undergraduate education.

Educational Goals:

  1. Gain insight into and a clearer understanding of the college admissions process.

  2. Explore the students’ own interests and desires for an undergraduate college experience.

  3. Experience a variety of college and university environments.

  4. Appreciate the local culture of the metro Chicago area.
