In the Shadow of Empires - History and Culture of Central Europe: Budapest, Prague, Vienna

Much of the vivacious nature of these cities has been developed through a diffusion of cultures that have intersected in these cities located in the heart of Europe. This trip will foster an appreciation of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, as well as allow students to witness the impact of the Ottoman Empire’s influx into Hungary in the sixteenth century. Along the way, we will explore three of the cultural capitals of Central Europe—Prague, Vienna, and Budapest. Each city offers its own perspective on the development of history. We will experience the music and food of each city, as well as observe the development of art and architecture. We will also examine the impact of the Holocaust on these cities, especially through the Jewish quarters in Prague and Budapest.

We will begin in Budapest, with stops including the Parliament Building, Heroes’ Square, and Széchenyi Bridge; the Buda Castle District and Fisherman’s Bastion; and visits to the city’s synagogues. Budapest is also home to the House of Terror, the only museum of its kind commemorating the victims of the fascist and communist regimes of 20th-century Hungary. As a bonus, we will attempt a unique Escape Room (invented in Budapest!), take a cruise on the Danube, and listen to a concert in a local church.

We will travel to Prague by train and learn about the Old Town and the world-famous astronomical clock, visit Prague Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral, Charles University, Charles Bridge, and Franz Kafka’s House. We will attend a concert in a local church.

In Vienna, we will visit monumental architectural sites such as Schönbrunn Palace, Hundertwasser Haus, the Imperial Crypt, Stephansplatz, and St. Stephen’s Cathedral. We will also tour the Vienna State Opera House and attend a Strauss dinner show.

All of these locations will feature opportunities to sample local cuisines and experience customs and cultures. Students should come with an open mind and an adventurous spirit. Students should be prepared to walk several kilometers a day, stand for long periods, and interact with non-English speakers. Students will share a room in each location with one other student. There will be both plane and train travel.

Students must have a passport valid through through October 1, 2026.
