Food Frenzy

The Boulder area is a particularly awesome place for curious young chefs. Food Frenzy wants you to not just experience good eating, but also learn how you can make it on your own.  We will spend the week exploring various food institutions that prepare and serve much of the food we enjoy on the Front Range. We’ll cover how to properly cut meat for consumption, cheese versus bread cultures, pizza making, dairy tours …and of course, we’ll be munching all the grub as we learn! When we’re not touring the Front Range’s food offerings in our trusty minibus, we’ll engage in a few lessons at school, researching, budgeting, and baking our own sweet treats. And then finally, after a week of learning the ins and outs of food prep, we’ll put our skills to work by assisting Chefs Ashley and Gary in their Magic Food Bus food truck. From prepping the orders to cooking in their food truck, we’ll make lunch for ourselves and a few lucky members of our Dawson staff.

Educational Goals:

  1. Learn how to safely cook and prepare a variety of foods by working with various food professionals in their industrial kitchens.

  2. Explore and enjoy local food production on the Front Range.

  3. Develop awareness of, understanding of, and consideration for how food goes from its most basic form to our plates.

  4. Learn to work within a specified budget on a variety of food projects.
